Working to improve mental health and emotional wellbeing in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland

Public health teams in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland have been working with Local Authorities, providers of mental health services and members of the public to consider how local health and care services can contribute towards improving the mental health and emotional wellbeing of local people.

Find out about local health issues

If you want to find out about health issues that affect people living in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland, there are two good sources of information. These are:

Annual Reports by the Directors of Public Health - these highlight health issues of current concern for local communities and set out the things that are being done to address them. The link takes you to the website of NHS South of Tyne and Wear

Joint Strategic Needs Assessments - these reports identify health and care issues that will affect local populations both now and in the future. These can be found on NHS South of Tyne and Wear's website, but also on the website of Gateshead Council.

New multidisiplinary School of Public Health Website

The new North East School of public health website www.sphne.org.uk was launched on the 14th February; it replaces the North East Teaching Public Health website.

The Vision for the School

"Every contact a health improvement contact & Every contract a health improvement contract".

 

What is the School?

The School of Public Health is the vehicle to deliver the education and development of the multi-disciplinary workforce essential if we are to be successful in implementing the North East strategy for health improvement.

 The web-site has 3 main areas;

Building Public Health Futures

Responsible for

·        Developing health improvement capacity through influencing teaching and learning

·        Influencing organisational development

·        Informing and influencing public health workforce planning

 

Public Health speciality training including Public Health Dentistry

Responsible for

·        The training of specialists who aim to be registered with the GMC or the UKPHR. This encompasses those on the formal training scheme and those using a portfolio route

 

North East Leadership for Improving Health and Well-being

Responsible for

·        The multi-disciplinary training and development programme aimed at  creating  a cadre of exceptional improvement leaders who will facilitate local rethinking of whole system public health

Gateshead Health Impact Assessment

The Gateshead Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Annual Report (November 2010) shows how local HIA Champions are leading 'demonstration projects' across a range of different interventions (including policy, building, planning, community engagement, equality and diversity and service provision) in different sectors (health, housing, leisure). They illustrate the potential benefits of taking action especially on the wider determinants of health, and how broadening public awareness and action for health and wellbeing can enhance social equity and equality."

Tobacco Control Action Plans 2008-2009

Tobacco Control Action Plans have been developed for Gateshead PCT, South Tyneside PCT and Sunderland PCT. Each plan contains smoking rates, impact of smoking on life expectancy, tobacco planning and co-ordination, a local tobacco action plan.

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

There is a statutory duty under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act (2007) for local authorities and primary care trusts to undertake a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA). A JSNA will identify current and future health and well-being needs of a local population. It will inform the priorities and targets set within Local Area Agreements and lead to agreed commissioning priorities that will improve outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
