If you want to find out about health issues that affect people living in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland, there are two good sources of information. These are:

Annual Reports by the Directors of Public Health - these highlight health issues of current concern for local communities and set out the things that are being done to address them. The link takes you to the website of NHS South of Tyne and Wear

Joint Strategic Needs Assessments - these reports identify health and care issues that will affect local populations both now and in the future. These can be found on NHS South of Tyne and Wear's website, but also on the website of Gateshead Council.

The 2006/07 Directors of Public Health Annual Reports is a combined report reflecting how public health teams are organised across Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The report highlights the similarities and differences between the health problems experienced by the three PCT areas.

Thirteen chapters of the 2005 Gateshead Compendium of Health Related Statistics are now available. The Compendium is an annual publication which accompanies the Director of Public Health's Annual Report. It pulls together the latest information on health outcomes and lifestyle behaviours for the population of Gateshead and compares these figures with those for the NE and England. The Director of Public Health's Annual Report this year focuses on three central concerns of public health; to promote and improve the health of the public, to protect the health of local people and to ensure that the health services available are of the highest quality.

A Community Health Profile of Gateshead has been published by the Association of Regional Public Health Observatories. The Profile contains an overview of the health status of the Gateshead population including information on life expectancy, CHD and cancer mortality and lifestyle behaviours such smoking and drinking. The Profile can be downloaded by visiting the Community Health Profile website.

Public Health: Everyone's Choice

The 2004 Compendium is attached below. Each chapter of the Compendium is posted as a separate pdf document. The Compendium includes statistics relating to health outcomes such as life expectancy, mortality and morbidity in primary care. In addition there is information on lifestyle behaviours including diet, alcohol consumption and physical exercise. For most indicators, it compares outcomes in Gateshead with those across the North East and England.

Public Health: Everything Changes It?

The Gateshead PCT Director of Public Health's Annual Report 2003 is now available in pdf format by following the link. The report focuses on the wider determinants of health including employment, education, environment and housing.
