Gateshead Nutrition Agreement

rest-veg271.jpg

As part of the Nutrition Strategy for Gateshead, a NUTRITION AGREEMENT has been developed with key partners in relation to good practice in nutrition education and directly commissioned nutrition work. The aim of this is to have a consistent and joined up approach to all nutrition/healthy eating work that takes place in Gateshead, as part of a local area agreement. A key aim of the strategy is to promote consistent nutrition messages on healthy choices for adults and children. Nutrition education encompasses key healthy eating messages, local information about services and programmes, cooking skills, addressing the barriers to healthier food consumption such as attitudes, awareness, access and availability. In addition a supporting document stating the current key messages for nutrition has been produced.

The agreement has been made specific to commissioning independent agencies, and the CHECKLIST (appendix 1) is almost a good practice guide for individuals, groups or organisations such as schools that may invite in guest speakers or external agencies. The KEY MESSAGES LEAFLET (appendix 2) for professionals forms an appendix to both the agreement and checklist.

This is the first 'full-system' guideline developed by NICE, covering prevention, identification and management. Follow this link for the NICE Obesity Guideline

Within Gateshead we will be looking at the guidance in detail and making the necessary adjustments to our local policies, programmes and strategies. So watch this space for further developments!

Get Cooking! Evaluation of a new cooking skills initiative for Gateshead

Cooking%20Skills.gif

Between April and July 2006, the Community Nutrition Assistants (CNAs) piloted a new cooking skills course across a range of venues in Gateshead. Based on the Get Cooking course, produced by Food Standard Agency Wales, the programme offered participants healthy eating advice combined with practical hands on cooking experience.

This evaluation looks at the processes involved in establishing and running the groups, and the short term impact of the groups on the knowledge and behaviour of the participants.

The results of the pilot groups were promising, with participants demonstrating improved knowledge of healthy eating and food preparation skills. The evaluation data also showed a small increase in fruit and vegetable consumption following the intervention.

Gateshead Millennium Study...

gms.jpg

The Gateshead Millennium Study (GMS; originally the Gateshead Millennium Baby Study) is a longitudinal research project of 1029 babies born in Gateshead in 1999/2000.

The original research looked into feeding and growth in infancy, and has now evolved tracking the weight, eating behaviours, and maternal approaches to feeding of these children from birth.

Now that the children are of school age the GMS is entering an exciting new phase. A further aim is investigate the development of child obesity which, you will be aware, is a key public health priority. The enquiry will investigate the development of common emotional and behavioural difficulties in children, and the relationship between such difficulties and eating/ weight problems.

This project is significant and exciting for Gateshead. More information, plus the contact details of the research team can be found on www.ncl.ac.uk/gms/

Pending this guidance, the public health white paper, Choosing Health, is committed to developing an obesity care pathway and a weight loss guide to support weight management in primary care.

The Department of Health is therefore carrying out a time limited consultation over a three week period.
The deadline for responses to this consultation is 22 December 2005, however responses will be able to be accepted until 3 January 2006.

Getting kids on the path to a healthier weight...

Unless you've been living in a box you will have heard about the obesity epidemic which seems to have gripped the nation. Unfortunately Gateshead is not exempt from this. You may have already found Gateshead's Body Mass Index Study on this website, which tells us that 18% of adults in Gateshead are obese. The picture isn't any brighter for Gateshead's children either. From 2001-2003 paediatric referrals (due to obesity) to dietetic services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital were up 150%, from 20 per annum to 50. More recently the referrals between May 2004 and February 2005 stand at 108.

With this in mind, a partnership programme has been launched in Gateshead looking at physical activity, nutrition and behaviour of overweight and obese children. 'Balance it! Getting the balance right' is a holistic programme aimed at overweight and obese children, but also includes support for the child's family.

The programme uses health professionals as the contact and referral point. Details of the programme can be found below. Please feel free to make comments or get in touch with Tom Hall (Project Co-ordinator) on tom.hall@ghpct.nhs.uk if you require any more info or would like to be refer onto the programme.
