As the Christmas party season gets underway, young people in Gateshead and South Tyneside will be encouraged to take positive steps towards understanding ‘How Much is Too Much?’ in a local alcohol awareness week from 11th to 17th December 2006. The campaign is aimed at helping the under 25s to make informed choices about their alcohol use through access to accurate and balanced information.
Gateshead and South Tyneside Primary Care Trusts have worked in partnership with GCE Advanced Health and Social Care students from Lord Lawson of Beamish School in Gateshead to develop special local posters. They considered the alcohol reduction messages and came up with various themes, which were then developed by the PCTs’ graphics service. The pupils chose the final poster for the campaign, which will be supported by national resource materials.

Amanda Healy, Lead Health Promotion Programmes Gateshead Primary Care Trust, said “ The students have worked extremely hard and have been very creative in developing ideas for reaching 18 – 24 years old with the 'How Much is Too Much?' message".
The latest message comes after the development of local Alcohol Harm Reduction strategies for Gateshead and South Tyneside addressing the issues of:
• Public information and communication
• Treatment services
• Crime and disorder
• Working with the alcohol industry
These reinforce the Government’s Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy, which is backed by the ‘Know Your Limits’ campaign, which primarily targets 18 to 24-year-olds by prompting consideration of the risks associated with excessive drinking. It is also hoped that other ‘at risk’ groups will benefit from a renewed focus on alcohol including pregnant and pre-pregnant women, plus those adults who may unknowingly be drinking at levels that are dangerous to their health.
