Following legislation passed in February, it was announced yesterday that ALL pubs and clubs in Gateshead (and everywhere else in England) will be smoke-free as from July 1st 2007. This will deliver a huge improvement in health. Non-smokers will no longer be forced to inhale second-hand smoke and smokers will be encouraged to kick the habit.
To give you something to do while we all wait for the law to come into force, tell us if your local pub has already gone smoke free. Tell us what you think about the legislation. If you are a health professional, what do your service users think of the change? Have your say by clicking on the "comment" link at the foot of this blog.

I sing in a band and am very pleased about this legistlation, it should have happened many years ago. I have been told that concert rooms in workingmens and social clubs will be exempt from this lgistlation. I will be most annoyed if this is true. As an entertainer it can be argued that we are more at risk than the general punter, because to do your performance you have to breath in quite a lot and quicker than say a member of the audience. Can you please reply!?
Thanking you

Club concert rooms are not exempt from the Smokefree legislation.
An exemption for clubs was an option when parliament voted on the Health Act in February 2006, but it was heavily outvoted.
If you change career and take up acting, the Government did include an exemption to allow stage actors to smoke if it is critical to the performance. Theatres and rehearsal rooms have to be smoke free for rehearsals, the exemption only applies to performances.
You can see the regulations at http://www.smokefreeengland.co.uk/thefacts/the-regulations.html
Gateshead Council website is regularly updated with information about preparig for the Smokefree law on 1 July - http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Business%20and%20Industry/hands/SmokeFree.aspx
