Reducing health inequalities beyond 2010

Success in achieving current national targets for reducing health inequalities will be evaluated in 2010. 2010 is almost upon us and the Government has recently announced a major review of health inequalities.

The review will be led by Sir Michael Marmot, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London. It will draw on the findings of a recent major report by the World Health Organisation's Commission on the Social Determinants of Health, chaired by Sir Michael. Follow the link to download the report, "Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health" from the WHO website.

Key aims of the review are:

  • to consider what reductions in inequalities can be achieved between 2010 and 2015 and in the longer term up to 2020

  • to identify the evidence which should underpin future policy and action relating to health inequalities

  • to show how this evidence could be translated into practice

  • to set new targets for reducing health inequalities up to 2020.
