If Stop Smoking Services are to be effective they must reach those communities where a higher proportion of adults smoke. A local lifestyle survey showed that smoking rates are highest among young men and women 18-24 years and among people in manual occupations. Are these groups using the Stop Smoking Service? Only if they are, will the service contribute to reducing the gap in life expectancy of 10 years between those communities in Gateshead with the highest and lowest average life expectancy.
