Gateshead Health Trainer Service

Project summary

Project Title: obesity awareness

Date/s: 17th - 23rd January 2011.

 Project description

Rising obesity rates mean one in ten people across the UK are now obese. The Health Trainer campaigns team selected National obesity week to launch the 2011 programme in Gateshead. Throughout the week Health Trainers staffed displays in local community settings offering information and signposting to services

 Outcome

At 10 locations we staffed various sessions where the general public were invited to take away information and discuss the potential of making healthy lifestyle changes.  In total 19 men and 97 women were provided with a range of healthy lifestyle information:-

1. a day - just eat more fruit & veg z card, DH (Leaflets)

2. 99 ways to cut 100 calories a day, Comic Company (Leaflets)

3. Guide to food labelling, BHF (Leaflets)

4. Know your labels, Diabetes UK (Leaflets)

Lessons learned

Having the campaigns group in place early 2011 has enabled resources to be deployed to local groups with more efficiency.  The 116 people we shared information were a mix of new contacts and regular visitors to the premises used. We anticipate the prospect of engaging new contact in personal health checks during the campaign programme
