Understanding the impact of smoking on health

In 2013, responsibility for commissioning health improvement services such as Stop Smoking services and weight management services will transfer from Primary Care Trusts to Local Authorities. To help promote an understanding of the impact of smoking on health within Local Authorities, ASH (Action on Smoking and Health), together with the Faculty of Public Health and regional campaiging groups, have produced some resources.

These resources will allow you to:

      ·   demonstrate the scale of the harm locally caused by tobacco use and the contribution this makes to health inequalities,

      ·   demonstrate the cost to local communities, local economies and service providers,

      ·   demonstrate the evidence of effectiveness of local action on tobacco and health.

To access the resources for your area go to www.ash.org.uk/localtoolkit/

The London Health Observatory has also produced a Tobacco Control Profile for each Local Authority population in England. Follow the link to download the profile for your area.
