The Irresponsibility Deal?
Report from the Children's Food Campaign
The Irresponsibility Deal?
This report analyses the Coalition Government's Public Health Responsibility Deal, focusing on the pledges made by members of the food industry, and concludes that the Deal is an irresponsible and inadequate response to public health problems.
The analyses conducted by CFC demonstrate what each "partner" had committed to, but also for the first time, what they had decided not to commit to, and in some cases what they had irrelevantly committed to.

Commission on Social Determinants of Health - Final Report
Closing the gap in a generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health
Social justice is a matter of life and death. It affects the way people live, their consequent chance of illness, and their risk of premature death. We watch in wonder as life expectancy and good health continue to increase in parts of the world and in alarm as they fail to improve in others.
The Commission on Social Determinants of Health was set up by former World Health Organization Director-General JW Lee. It was tasked to collect, collate, and synthesize global evidence on the social determinants of health and their impact on health inequity, and to make recommendations for action to address that inequity.
The material for developing solutions to the gross inequities between and within countries is in the Report of this Commission.

The Sunderland Healthy Communities Collaborative Interim Report June 2008
This report intends to highlight Healthy Communities Collaborative community activity over the last twelve months.
The Sunderland HCC is targeting three wards across the City (St. Chads ward, St. Peters ward & the Hetton ward) encouraging earlier recognition and presentation of breast, bowel lung cancer in the identified local communities. These sites were chosen due to the combined high prevalence and mortality rates of bowel, breast & lung cancer in the areas. Three HCC teams of volunteers and health professionals are working at grassroots level in order to encourage local people to access their GP sooner with potential signs and symptoms of the three cancers in addition to advocating the importance of breast and bowel screening.

Gateshead Nutrition Agreement
As part of the Nutrition Strategy for Gateshead, a NUTRITION AGREEMENT has been developed with key partners in relation to good practice in nutrition education and directly commissioned nutrition work. The aim of this is to have a consistent and joined up approach to all nutrition/healthy eating work that takes place in Gateshead, as part of a local area agreement. A key aim of the strategy is to promote consistent nutrition messages on healthy choices for adults and children. Nutrition education encompasses key healthy eating messages, local information about services and programmes, cooking skills, addressing the barriers to healthier food consumption such as attitudes, awareness, access and availability. In addition a supporting document stating the current key messages for nutrition has been produced.
The agreement has been made specific to commissioning independent agencies, and the CHECKLIST (appendix 1) is almost a good practice guide for individuals, groups or organisations such as schools that may invite in guest speakers or external agencies. The KEY MESSAGES LEAFLET (appendix 2) for professionals forms an appendix to both the agreement and checklist.

Evaluation of Your Health, Your Care, Your Say
An independent report commissioned by the Department of Health. 2006
The Your Health, Your Care, Your Say initiative (YHYCYS) for the Department of Health created one of the largest and most ambitious public engagement exercises ever mounted in the UK.
This report summarises the results of an evaluation study which examines the whole process but which focuses on the ‘listening exercise’ – the local, regional and national deliberative events that enabled members of the public to discuss a range of topics (based on information provided and a carefully structured process).
The evaluation study aimed to come to conclusions about the extent to which the methodology chosen and the delivery of YHYCYS met the objectives set, and draw out learning for future public engagement activity.

In Gateshead 32% of adults smoke- that’s higher than the national average of 27%. In some parts of Gateshead over 50% of adults smoke. The proportions of men and women smoking are similar.
Smoking rates are lower among socio-economic class I, and rise successively through to the most disadvantaged classes IV and V. Although a lot of adults have given up smoking the number of adults who smoke has stopped
falling and more are starting. About 70% of current smokers would like to quit.
