Health Trainer Champions - bowel cancer awareness 2012 Challenge

Going for Gold Health Trainer Champion Challenge

The Bowel Cancer Info Share Pack aims to help raise awareness of bowel cancer prevention, signs and symptoms and the screening programme with family and friends. Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, but most importantly caught early it can be treated very successfully. This is why the South of Tyne Bowel Cancer Screening Centre and the Gateshead Health Trainer Champions have produced the info share pack.

A team of volunteer Health Trainer Champions and bowel cancer screening centre staff have the Going for Gold challenge of giving out 2012 Bowel cancer info share packs across the borough of Gateshead. The share packs aims to spread the word through a relay of information being passed on to family and friends.

Going for Gold is Gateshead Council's campaign to inspire, encourage and enthuse local people, whatever their age or activity level, to participate in sport and physical activity with the aim of leading a healthier lifestyle, and we know a healthy lifestyle reduces your risk of bowel cancer.

A Launch event on the 24th January at 1.00pm in the historic Gateshead Old Town Hall will mark the start of the challenge visiting sports clubs, community centres and leisure facilities and more giving out share packs.

At the launch there will be staff from the Bowel Cancer Screening Centre with a walk through inflatable bowel. Health information on nutrition and diet plus activities including a free exercise taster and gym tots.

The event is free and an opportunity to take away a bowel cancer info share pack and free swim voucher for every person who participates.

The league will be hosting at Houghton Sports Centre's brand new 3rd Generation synthetic pitch.

The Sunderland Council Business 5 Aside League is scheduled to run every Tuesday evening for 14 weeks beginning on Tuesday September 6th with the final round of games to take place on Tuesday 6th December. Each game will be scheduled to last for 26 minutes (2 x 13 minute halves) and teams will be invited to continue for a second season after Christmas. All league tables and fixtures will be available online through The FA's dedicated league website "Full-Time", so teams can track their progress in the league as well as check up on upcoming fixtures.

As a bonus, each team who enters will be invited to play in a one off tournament free of charge on Saturday 3rd September. This tournament will mark the official opening of the facility.

Following the seasons climax the winning team will be presented with the Houghton 5 a Side trophy to be defended the following season.  Companies are not restricted as to how many departments or teams they wish to enter. Carers Gym pilot

Gateshead Council Sport, Wellbeing and Independence service initiated a pilot gym voucher scheme in November 2010 for Carers in Gateshead. The first 200 carers to sign up will receive a free gym induction pass to be used in any Gateshead Council Sport & Leisure gym (excluding Birtley Leisure Centre).

Each person who signs up will be asked to complete a one to one personal health check at the start, and at 6 and 12 months of the scheme to monitor change and progress made.

The voucher covers the induction and first months admission cost to use the gym. After this period participants who are in receipt of Carers Allowance will be able to access facilities at a discounted rate as part of Gateshead Council's Active Access scheme.

Gateshead Health Trainers will be the main point of contact for carers who may require assistance. Participants will be invited to make an appointment with a Health Trainer to complete a Personal Health Check, allowing them to take a look at their lifestyle and current health priorities. The Health Trainer will then assist in signposting them to the appropriate services and provide information on how they can further improve their lifestyle.

For further information on the scheme contact the Gateshead Health Trainers on 0191 433 6953 or email healthtrainers@gateshead.gov.uk

obesity awareness

Gateshead Health Trainer Service

Project summary

Project Title: obesity awareness

Date/s: 17th - 23rd January 2011.

 Project description

Rising obesity rates mean one in ten people across the UK are now obese. The Health Trainer campaigns team selected National obesity week to launch the 2011 programme in Gateshead. Throughout the week Health Trainers staffed displays in local community settings offering information and signposting to services

 Outcome

At 10 locations we staffed various sessions where the general public were invited to take away information and discuss the potential of making healthy lifestyle changes.  In total 19 men and 97 women were provided with a range of healthy lifestyle information:-

1. a day - just eat more fruit & veg z card, DH (Leaflets)

2. 99 ways to cut 100 calories a day, Comic Company (Leaflets)

3. Guide to food labelling, BHF (Leaflets)

4. Know your labels, Diabetes UK (Leaflets)

Comments/feedback

  • Helpful the drop in being at the leisure centre this year
  • I took some information leaflet
  • Had my BP taken and HT explained about the risks of being obese
  • Cholesterol information is being posted out to me
  • Well laid out, eye catching
  • Change for life leaflet interesting and bright makes you want to look at them
  • Great display
  • Very helpful information and some new ideas
  • Good tips
  • Too old to change now
  • Reinforces GP's message to me - very good

Lessons learned

Having the campaigns group in place early 2011 has enabled resources to be deployed to local groups with more efficiency.  The 116 people we shared information were a mix of new contacts and regular visitors to the premises used. We anticipate the prospect of engaging new contact in personal health checks during the campaign programme

Free Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) Training

Our Alcohol IBA course is free to all NHS staff across Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) is effective in helping people who drink in a harmful way to reduce their alcohol consumption and our IBA course will enable you to:

  • Develop a "prompt" tool to help you "Think Drink" for common presentations

  • Raise the issue of alcohol related harm using a simple and non-confrontational "opening"

  • Calculate "Units" confidently

  • Assess a clients readiness to change and modify your response accordingly

  • Deliver advice in a short, personalised and structured way

The training can be delivered as an "open" group session, where participants may come from one or more of these services, or as a "closed" session, which will be restricted to members of your team. Our course is in two parts:

1. An on-line pre-learning programme (max of 60 mins). This gives the theory behind IBA and describes the effects of drinking at a higher than recommended level.

2. A practical skills workshop (90 to 120 mins). This will equip you with the practical skills and confidence to identify the early signs of harmful drinking and to raise the issue of alcohol with the patient. You will be able to accurately assess their risk and learn how to say the right things that will help the patient.

Visit www.alcoholfirstcontact.co.uk to find out more.

Sexual Health Event - 4 Questions

Choosing Health identifies the need to make "every contact a health improving contact".

As part of its ongoing consultation on the needs of staff, CEHI is asking in relation to sexual health the following questions.

1. What training do you need?
2. What kinds of activities or information would it be useful to share between practitioners, teams, services and organisations?
3. What sorts of information, data or advice would it be helpful to access?
4. What kind of support or training do you need in order to make best use of the weblog?

We'd be grateful if you could take time to consider the above questions and then use the COMMENTS link below to add your responses.

[Thanks to the very many of you who attended today's event and who took time to comment via the blog.

Choosing Health? How can we keep the journey going?

Following the 'Choosing Health' event, which was held at Gateshead Civic Centre on the 2nd February 2005, we have collated and analysed all the feedback that was given on the day. If you attended the event you will remember we asked you three things you can do to keep the journey going. This has now been analysed and drawn together in the following document. Download file

This document will be used in pushing forward the 'Choosing Health' agenda in Gateshead. We will be addressing this document in more detail at the next 'Choosing Health' event we are planning in May 2005. So watch this space!

Also, on the day you were asked to express your interest in the topic areas discussed. If you can't remember what you signed yourself up for, or you're interested to see who else is signed up, then here is a list to refresh your memory. Download file
